I need the courage to break free from this life to chase a brighter future. I pray that God gives me the strength to persevere through this tough time. I feel like this is my final opportunity to set things right in my life. Suddenly, the devil appears to be mocking me and my struggles.ĭespite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles, I knew without a doubt that I had to escape this place.

I feel like I am approaching the end of something, but I have no idea what the beginning was supposed to be. I refuse to let anyone or anything force me to stay here again. I've reached my limit and can no longer endure these circumstances. The streets are conveying to me that now is the time to leave this place behind. There are moments when I believe that the streets can speak to me.Īnd now their telling me it's time to walk I'm also tired of being stuck in a low-level, unfulfilling job.īreaking free from this place is essential for me to seek out a better, more meaningful life. I'm tired of living amongst the filth and corruption that pervades this entire city.Īnd I'm sick of being just another garbage man I am aware that in this city, even religious figures resort to selling temporary pleasures. Now there's a priest on the corner selling one night stands I understand the need to free myself from this situation. I walk down the street another mans dream lies broken at my feetĪs I walk down the street, I see someone's shattered dream at my feet, which isn't that uncommon, just like how some kids enjoy shooting their favorite candies. He sees the devil grinning at him, daring him to try and make a break for it, and he knows he has to take that chance - this is his last chance to get it right, and he won't let it slip away without a fight. He realizes that his time is running out, but he doesn't want to face his end without at least trying to escape the emptiness and despair of his current existence. He knows he needs to "break away" from this existence and find a "better way".Īs the song progresses, the narrator becomes increasingly desperate, feeling the weight of his hopeless situation pressing down on him. He is tired of being a "garbage man", barely scraping by in a city where even the priests are reduced to selling their bodies. The song is a lament for the narrator's own wasted existence, which he feels is on par with the garbage strewn around the city. He is disillusioned with the world he lives in, where even children are reduced to shooting candy instead of living real and meaningful lives. The opening line sets the stage for the rest of the song, as the protagonist walks down the street and sees evidence of shattered dreams all around him.

The imagery of a guy wandering around and seeing crazy things works great. The song "Break Away" by Court Jester is a powerful exploration of the desperation and longing for escape felt by someone trapped in a dead-end life. If there is supposed to be one, it is two layers too removed for my taste. It is difficult to say if there is some underlying symbolism in the lyrics. It is something like a cross between Alice and Wonderland and Dante’s Inferno.

Imagine some sort of medieval play being reenacted. The song would make for a great music video where the lyrics were animated literally. It is only slightly more out there than Stairway to Heaven, Good Vibrations, or Like a Rolling Stone and about the same length. King Crimson’s “Court of the Crimson King” was never on the radio, and that is unfortunate.
